Reimagining
Agriculture

Our planet is facing a changing climate and running out of farmable land just when we need it most. To feed a growing population, we need a whole new approach to farming. That’s where Plenty® comes in. We grow fresh, flavorful produce in controlled environments, vertically indoors–so it can be better for the world and for you.

How We Grow

Compared to outdoor farms, our Virginia vertical farm is designed to…

  • Save millions of gallons of water per year
  • Produce up to 86x more strawberries per acre, using as little as 1% of the land
  • Prevent, monitor, and respond to unwanted contaminants that can normally drift in and out of outdoor farms that have uncontrolled environments

By growing vertically indoors, Plenty® is able to dramatically reduce the land and water required to farm at a commercial scale while also making it possible to grow where we used to think it was impossible, like in the center of a city or the middle of the desert.

Building a Cleaner Future

Every day, we’re working to make our food supply more secure while decreasing the impact that agriculture makes on the environment.

Less Land & Less Water

We want to do a lot with a little, so we built our farms to grow up, using less land to grow more produce. And when it comes to water, our Virginia farm has the potential to save millions of gallons of water per year when compared with conventional agriculture and still feed millions of people.

Transportation

Plenty farms can be built anywhere so we can imagine a future where everyone can eat more locally.

Pollution & Uncontrolled Runoff

Unlike in outdoor farming, we have the ability to better monitor, optimize, and control what comes into and out of our indoor farms.

We’re always looking for innovations in other industries that affect our impact on the environment–like packaging and energy sources. These are complex challenges, but we know conserving natural resources is worth the effort.

Who We Are

We’re a company of scientists, farmers, business people, creatives, and even a few friendly robots.

What started over a decade ago at the University of Wyoming has spread across the US to Virginia, where we’ll continue a radically new way to grow crops.

“I felt that technology could help feed a lot of people, extend lives, fight environmental destabilization, and give land back to the natural landscape. Producing food is a good, honest pursuit, but the food system is complex and abstract. I hope that Plenty® can change that.”

Where We Farm

Laramie, Wyoming

The original Plenty® farm

This is Plenty’s research and development center, where each of our crops is first tested and perfected. We run thousands of tests to figure out the right levels of hydration, nutrients, and light to grow the very best plants indoors – exploring the outer bounds of what is possible for indoor farming. We take what we learn here and apply it to our full-scale farms.

Richmond, Virginia

The berry farm

Our strawberry campus in Virginia is the world’s first farm to grow indoor, vertically farmed berries at scale. The new Plenty Richmond Farm is designed to grow over 4 million pounds of delicious strawberries a year—even through the dead of winter. We can adjust every element of the farm (like light, humidity and temperature) to create the perfect environment for our plants to thrive and grow strawberries with peak-season flavor all year long.

FAQ

What we’re doing is new, so of course, there are questions. We have questions every day! Below you’ll find some of our most frequently asked questions and the best answers we have to date.

Plenty® uses vertical grow towers and an innovative lighting, water, and nutrient system to grow strawberries. By growing indoors, we can create an environment that can be fully controlled, delivering just the right amount of light, water, and nutrients plants need to be their best. Our technology allows us to use less space and water to grow more food. Plenty Farms® are designed to grow significantly more produce per acre while using just a fraction of the land and water than conventional farms.

No, Plenty is not certified organic. With Plenty’s unique indoor growing technology, we are able to control the growing environment in ways that outdoor and soil-based farms (conventional or organic) cannot. Because of that, we have chosen not to pursue organic certification and are instead focused on optimizing the benefits of our vertical farming systems through dynamic innovation to deliver the most flavorful fruit possible. Our strawberries are non-GMO and our farms are SQF- and GMP-certified (Safe Quality Food and Good Manufacturing Practices) while tackling critical sustainability concerns including climate resilience, minimizing land and water use, and preventing uncontrolled agricultural runoff.

We currently only grow strawberries for market, but our farms have grown leafy greens in the past. Our plant scientists are always looking for new fruits and vegetables to grow with our system.
